I have driven the road from Leh to Kargil so many times that I know exactly where the shadows fall on the valley floor in the late afternoon. Most people treat this stretch as just a way to get from one town to the other, but if you treat it as an active part of your Ladakh road itinerary, it transforms into one of the most interesting days of your entire trip.

The drive covers roughly 220 kilometres, but don't look at the clock. Look at the landscape. From the confluence of rivers to the ancient monasteries clinging to the mountainsides, this route deserves a full day of your attention.

Route Overview and Drive Time

Expect the drive to take you between 6 and 8 hours. It sounds like a long day, but the roads are generally good and the scenery changes constantly. Starting from Leh at 8 AM is ideal; it gets you to Kargil by late afternoon, leaving you just enough time to settle into your hotel and walk through the market before dinner.

Be prepared for the change in altitude. You descend from Leh and then move through varied terrain, which can be taxing. Take it slow, drink water, and remind your driver that you want to stop for photographs whenever the light looks interesting.

Essential Stops Along the Way

The Sangam—the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers—is the first major stop. It’s a classic, yes, but seeing the two different colours of the water meet is genuinely striking. Further along, the Magnetic Hill is a popular curiosity, though I suggest using the time to visit the nearby Gurudwara Patthar Sahib instead.

Lamayuru Monastery is the absolute highlight. It is perched on a landscape that looks like a moonscape. If you don't stop here, you have missed the soul of this route.

Must-See Attractions Between Leh and Kargil

Aside from Lamayuru, keep an eye out for the Moonland rock formations. They are surreal, especially if you catch them in the bright midday sun. Also, consider a quick stop at the Alchi Monastery; it is one of the oldest in the region and holds frescoes that are quite different from the newer monasteries in Leh.

If you have a bit of extra time, the road near Fotu La pass is where the views become truly expansive. It is the highest point on this route, and the view back towards the valley is something you will remember for a long time.

How to Fit This Into a Multi-Day Package

We usually integrate this drive into a larger circuit. It works best as the transit day after you have finished your acclimatisation in Leh and before you head into the more remote Zanskar Valley. It acts as a bridge, preparing you for the more rugged terrain ahead.

By planning this as a full-day excursion rather than a rush to get to Kargil, you arrive rested. We handle the permit side of things so that you don't have to worry about paperwork while you are trying to enjoy the views.
