The road to Wular Lake is a personal favourite of mine; it starts with the organized chaos of Srinagar’s outskirts before opening up into the vast, flat plains that define the northern valley. Many visitors ask us exactly how to reach Wular Lake from Srinagar, expecting a simple bus route, but the reality involves a bit more planning.

The distance is roughly 60 kilometres, but in Kashmir, distance is measured in patience rather than kilometres. Depending on the traffic near Sopore or Bandipora, you should budget for at least two to two and a half hours each way.

Why Private Taxis Are Preferred

If you want to see the lake properly, I always recommend hiring a private taxi for the day. Public transport—sumos and buses—will get you to the town of Bandipora or Sopore, but they won't stop at the best vantage points along the shoreline.

With a private car, you can choose where to stop. There are several spots where the road runs right alongside the water, and having your own driver means you can stop to take photos or grab a tea at a local stall without worrying about a bus schedule.

Public Transport Realities

Public transport is available from the Parimpora bus stand in Srinagar. You can catch a bus headed for Bandipora. It is incredibly cheap, usually costing a few hundred rupees, but it is not for everyone.

You will be packed in with commuters, and the journey will take longer due to frequent stops. If you are a solo backpacker looking to save money, it is a perfectly fine option. If you are travelling as a family or with a lot of camera gear, I would strongly advise against it.

Combining Wular with Other Day Trips

I rarely suggest a trip just to Wular Lake alone, unless you are a dedicated birdwatcher. It makes much more sense to combine it with a visit to Manasbal Lake, which is nearby and offers a completely different, more serene experience.

You can spend the morning at the quiet gardens of Manasbal and then spend the afternoon looking out over the vast expanse of Wular. We have plenty of itineraries that link these two destinations on our Manasbal Lake page.

Booking Seamless Transfers

The best way to reach Wular Lake from Srinagar is to have someone handle the logistics for you. We book these transfers for our clients every week, ensuring the driver knows exactly which spots are currently accessible.

Traffic can be unpredictable, and having a local driver who knows the shortcuts around the busy market towns is a significant advantage. If you want a stress-free day, drop us a line and we can arrange a driver who knows the lakeshore like the back of his hand.
