How to Reach Leh from Delhi: Rail and Road Connections

Understanding the logistics of the journey from the capital to the high desert.

Planning your trip to Ladakh? We explain the reality of reaching Leh by train and road, so you can make an informed decision.

When I tell people there is no train station in Leh, I usually see a mix of confusion and surprise; it is the most common misconception in planning a Ladakh holiday.

You cannot simply book a ticket from New Delhi Railway Station to Leh. The terrain is too rugged and the altitude too extreme. However, you can certainly reach Leh from Delhi by train if you are willing to combine rail travel with a scenic road journey.

The goal for most of our clients is finding the balance between a quick arrival and a memorable transit. Whether you want to see the valleys of Kashmir or the winding roads of Himachal, the rail-to-road connection is a major part of the adventure.

The Reality of Train Travel to Ladakh

Trains are a fantastic way to reach the foothills, but they only take you so far. You will travel by rail to a major transit hub, and from there, you must switch to a road vehicle to climb into the high desert.

Do not expect to see snow-capped peaks from the train window for the entire journey. The rail portion is mostly about crossing the plains and entering the lower mountains, leaving the high-altitude driving for the final leg.

Best Rail Routes from Delhi

The most reliable rail routes from Delhi are to Jammu Tawi or Kalka. From Delhi to Jammu, you have several fast overnight trains. Once in Jammu, you are perfectly positioned to travel through Srinagar towards Leh.

The route to Kalka is also a popular choice. It serves as the gateway to Himachal Pradesh, allowing you to drive via Manali, which is one of the most stunning, albeit challenging, mountain drives you will ever take.

Completing Your Journey by Road

Once you leave the train, the road journey is where your endurance is tested. If coming from Jammu via Srinagar, the road is generally well-maintained and follows the route over Zoji La.

It is a long drive—often two full days if you want to avoid exhaustion. We always recommend an overnight stop in Kargil. It breaks the journey, lets you see a different part of the region, and helps you acclimatise to the gain in elevation.

Why Planning Your Connection is Vital

A missed train connection in India can derail your plans for days. I have seen travellers lose their booked accommodation in Leh because they failed to account for a buffer day between their rail arrival and their road transport.

Always plan for at least a 6-hour gap between your train's scheduled arrival and your taxi pickup. If you are travelling in the peak of summer, keep in mind that road traffic on the mountain passes can cause delays of several hours.

Alternatives to Rail Travel

If the prospect of a train-to-car transfer sounds exhausting, remember that you can always fly. A flight from Delhi to Leh is just over an hour. It is the most efficient use of your time if you only have a week.

However, for those who love the journey as much as the destination, the road-train combination is unbeatable. Just be prepared for the change in pace—it is not for the impatient.

Before you book

Reaching Leh is a journey that starts long before you touch down in the high desert. Whether you choose to travel by rail and road or prefer the convenience of a flight, the preparation is what makes it smooth.
