Planning a Kashmir Honeymoon: What Actually Matters
Houseboat or hotel, how many days, which months, and the handful of decisions that make the difference between a good trip and a great one.

Kashmir has been India's default honeymoon destination for seventy years, which means there is an enormous amount of advice about it and most of it is generic. These are the decisions that actually change the experience.
Decision one: how many days
Six nights is the sweet spot. Two in Srinagar, two in Gulmarg, two in Pahalgam. Five works but makes the Gulmarg–Pahalgam transfer feel rushed. Eight lets you add Sonmarg or Doodhpathri without the trip becoming a tour.
What does not work is four nights covering four destinations. That is a week of car journeys interrupted by photographs.
Decision two: houseboat or hotel
Do one or two nights on a houseboat and the rest in hotels. A heritage houseboat — cedar-panelled, khatamband ceilings, a verandah onto the lake — is genuinely special and unlike anything else in India. Seven nights on one starts to feel confined, and bathrooms and heating vary enormously between boats.
Decision three: which month
- First half of April: tulips, blossom and snow-capped peaks together. The most photogenic fortnight of the year.
- May and June: everything open, warm days, peak rates and peak crowds.
- Late September to October: autumn chinars, clear air, fewer people, lower rates. Our usual recommendation.
- January and February: snow, extremely romantic, lowest prices, but cold and occasionally disrupted.
Decision four: what to actually book
The things worth paying for, in order: a private car and driver for the whole trip, two nights in Gulmarg rather than a day trip, a lakefront or lake-view room rather than a city-facing one, and pre-booked gondola tickets if you are travelling in winter.
The things that are commonly oversold: multi-day houseboat stays, helicopter transfers that get cancelled for weather, and 'deluxe' packages where the upgrade is entirely in the brochure.
The small touches that are worth arranging
- A private sunset shikara rather than a shared ghat ride.
- A candlelit dinner on the houseboat deck — needs a day's notice.
- A half-day photoshoot with a local photographer, usually in the gardens or at Betaab Valley.
- A traditional wazwan cooked privately, ordered a day ahead.
- Room decoration on arrival, which every good property will do if asked in advance.
What to tell your planner
The three most useful things you can tell us are your exact dates, whether you would rather have more time in fewer places or see more, and a realistic budget band. With those three, we can send you something specific rather than a brochure.

How many days is ideal for a Kashmir honeymoon?
Six nights — two each in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Five is workable, eight is comfortable.
Which is the most romantic place in Kashmir?
A heritage houseboat on Nigeen Lake at sunset is hard to beat. Gulmarg after fresh snowfall runs it close.
Is a houseboat stay comfortable?
On a good deluxe-category boat, very. Standards vary widely, so the specific boat matters far more than the category label.
