The Best Time to Visit Kashmir: A Month-by-Month Guide

Almost every search for Kashmir travel advice ends up at the same unhelpful answer: April to October. That covers seven months and four distinct seasons, each of which produces a completely different holiday. The honest answer is that the best time depends on exactly one thing — what you came for.

March to May: blossom, tulips and melting snow

Spring is the valley's showpiece. The almond orchards at Badamwari bloom first, usually in the second or third week of March. The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden then opens for roughly twenty-five days, with peak colour almost always in the first ten days of April. Daytime temperatures in Srinagar sit around 15–22°C and the Pir Panjal still carries heavy snow, which means the photographs have both flowers and white peaks in the same frame.

Gulmarg is in an unusual sweet spot in March: skiing is still running on Apharwat while the meadow below is beginning to green up. Sonmarg and the higher passes are mostly still closed, and Gurez and Bangus remain inaccessible until the Razdan Pass clears.

June to August: the classic summer season

This is peak season and it is peak for good reason. Every road is open, every trek is running, and the valley is at its greenest. Sonmarg, Gurez, Bangus, Doodhpathri and the Great Lakes trek are all accessible. Srinagar runs 16–31°C, which feels extraordinary if you have come from Delhi in June.

The trade-off is crowds and price. Hotel rates roughly double, Gulmarg gondola queues are long, and Betaab Valley between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. is genuinely busy. The Amarnath Yatra also runs through this window, which brings heavy traffic and security arrangements to the Pahalgam and Sonmarg roads.

September to November: the connoisseur's season

If you asked people who live in Srinagar when they would choose to show the valley to a friend, most would say late October. The chinars at Naseem Bagh, Nishat and Achabal turn deep crimson. The saffron fields at Pampore bloom purple for about two weeks from the last week of October. The air is the clearest it gets all year, the crowds have gone and rates have dropped.

Trekking continues into early October on most routes. Gurez and Bangus stay open until the passes close, usually some time in late October or early November.

December to February: snow

Winter is the most underrated season here. Gulmarg gets reliable snow from late December, with the deepest cover in January and February. Srinagar sits between -3°C and 8°C, and during Chillai Kalan — the forty-day deep winter beginning around 21 December — parts of the Dal can freeze solid.

Rates are at their lowest, the valley is at its emptiest, and the photographs are the best you will ever take there. The costs are real though: some roads close after heavy snowfall, Sonmarg access is weather-dependent, and hotels without proper heating are genuinely unpleasant.

So which month should you actually pick?

  • First visit, want everything open and do not mind crowds: late May or September.
  • Honeymoon: first half of April or the second half of October.
  • Snow and skiing: late January.
  • Photography: last week of October into the first week of November.
  • Budget: late February or the first half of November.
  • Trekking: mid-July to mid-September.

If you tell us what matters most to you, we will give you a straight answer on dates — including telling you to move your trip by a fortnight if that is what makes it better.
