A Realistic 7-Day Kashmir Itinerary
Seven days, three bases, no four-hour transfers. The itinerary we actually build for most first-time visitors, with the reasoning behind each decision.

Most seven-day Kashmir itineraries online try to fit in six destinations and end up being a week of driving. This one uses three bases, keeps every transfer under three hours and still covers everything a first-time visitor actually wants to see.
Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar, slow afternoon
Land at Srinagar, transfer to a houseboat on Nigeen or the Dal. Do nothing ambitious. A sunset shikara, dinner on the boat, early night. The flight from most Indian cities lands late morning and the rest of the day is better spent adjusting than sightseeing.
Day 2 — Srinagar: gardens and the old city
Start with Chashme Shahi, then Pari Mahal, then Nishat, finishing at Shalimar. In April, substitute the Tulip Garden for Chashme Shahi. Afternoon in the old city: Jamia Masjid, the copper bazaar, a papier-mâché workshop. If you are a photographer, trade this day's morning for the 5 a.m. floating market instead.
Days 3–4 — Gulmarg
Drive to Gulmarg (50 km, about two hours) and stay two nights. Day one: gondola Phase 1 to Kongdoori and, if the weather is clear and you have no altitude concerns, Phase 2 to the Apharwat ridge. Day two: in summer, walk to Khilanmarg or play the golf course; in winter, ski lessons at Kongdoori.
Staying overnight rather than day-tripping is the single biggest improvement you can make to a Kashmir itinerary. Day-trippers arrive at 11 a.m. and leave at 4 p.m., missing the quiet morning gondola and the evening light on the meadow entirely.
Days 5–6 — Pahalgam
Transfer from Gulmarg to Pahalgam (around 140 km, four hours) via Srinagar, stopping at Pampore for saffron and, in April, the Tulip Garden. Two nights in Pahalgam.
Day one covers the three side valleys by union taxi: Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari. Start early — this is the busiest circuit in Kashmir by late morning. Day two is deliberately lighter: Baisaran meadow on horseback, a walk along the Lidder, or trout fishing if you have arranged a permit.
Day 7 — Return to Srinagar and depart
Drive back to Srinagar (90 km, 2.5 hours) for an afternoon or evening flight. If you have a late departure, stop at Achabal or Verinag on the way, or spend an hour shopping on Residency Road.
| Day | Base | Main activity | Driving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Srinagar | Arrive, sunset shikara | 30 min |
| 2 | Srinagar | Mughal gardens, old city | Local |
| 3 | Gulmarg | Transfer, gondola | 2 hrs |
| 4 | Gulmarg | Khilanmarg or skiing | Local |
| 5 | Pahalgam | Transfer via Pampore | 4 hrs |
| 6 | Pahalgam | Aru, Betaab, Chandanwari | 2 hrs local |
| 7 | Srinagar | Return, depart | 2.5 hrs |
What we deliberately left out, and why
- Sonmarg: it is a five-hour round trip from Srinagar and deserves an overnight. Add it on an eight or nine-day trip, not a seven-day one.
- Doodhpathri and Yusmarg: lovely, but they compete with Gulmarg for the same meadow experience.
- Ladakh: it needs five days minimum including acclimatisation. It cannot be bolted onto a week in Kashmir.
- Jammu: unless you are doing Vaishno Devi, it adds driving without adding much.
If you have eight or nine days
Add Sonmarg as an overnight between Srinagar and Pahalgam, or add Doodhpathri as a day trip from Srinagar on day three. With ten days, Gurez in summer is the most rewarding addition anywhere in the valley.
Quick answers
Related questions
Is 7 days enough for Kashmir?
Yes, comfortably, for Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam with two nights at each. Adding Sonmarg or Doodhpathri needs eight or nine days.
Should I stay overnight in Gulmarg or day trip?
Stay overnight. Day trips miss the early gondola and the evening light, which are the two best parts of being there.
Can I cover Kashmir and Ladakh in 7 days?
Not sensibly. Ladakh needs at least two acclimatisation nights in Leh before you go anywhere, so a combined trip needs twelve days minimum.
