The road to Sonmarg is a test of patience, but the moment you turn the final bend and see the meadow opening up, the three-hour drive from Srinagar vanishes from your memory. It is a high-altitude rush of cold air and raw mountain scenery that demands your full attention.
Most visitors treat Sonmarg as a fleeting day trip. If you only have one day to soak in the 'Meadow of Gold', your plan needs to be tight. This sonmarg 1 day itinerary focuses on getting you out of the car and onto the glacier trails before the crowds peak.
How to Structure a 1-Day Sonmarg Visit
Start early. I cannot stress this enough. Leave Srinagar by 7:30 AM to hit the Ganderbal stretch before the heavy tourist convoys start their engine. If you leave at 9:00 AM, you lose two hours to road congestion near the town entrance.
Once you arrive, do not linger in the main market. The town is mostly a transition point for supplies. Your priority is to get toward the mountain base where the air is still sharp and the light is manageable for photos.

Morning Visit to Thajiwas Glacier
The Thajiwas Glacier is the primary reason people trek up here. In summer, the snow is patchy, but the surrounding valley, carved by millennia of ice, is stunning. You will need a pony or a brisk hike to reach the prime vantage points.
We usually advise clients to take the pony ride up if they aren't regular hikers. The path can be slippery and churned up by hooves. Once you reach the top, you get a clear look at the glacier face and the stream that feeds the valley below.

Lunch Along the Banks of the Sindh River
After the descent, your legs will want a break. The Sindh River flows with a relentless, icy energy through the valley floor. Find a quiet patch of grass a bit away from the main road bridge to enjoy your packed lunch.
Listening to the water roar past is better than any cafe soundtrack. If you have time, dip your hands in the current; it is glacial melt, so be warned, it numbs the fingers within seconds.

Afternoon Exploration of Zero Point / Zojila Pass
If you have a reliable driver and the road permits, push toward Zero Point. This is where the landscape shifts from grassy meadows to high-altitude, rocky desolation. It feels like the edge of the world.
Expect the air to be significantly thinner here. Take it slow. Many travelers try to rush through this section, but the best approach is to stand still for a few minutes and simply watch the clouds whip over the jagged ridges.

Essential Timing Tips for Returning to Srinagar
Start your descent by 4:00 PM. The road back to Srinagar passes through narrow mountain sections that are safer to navigate in daylight. Also, local traffic patterns shift toward evening, and you don't want to get stuck behind a line of trucks on the switchbacks.
Stopping at Manasbal Lake on your way back is a popular choice, but only do this if you have left Sonmarg early enough to clear the congestion.
