Magnetic Hill Tour Inclusions: Planning Your Perfect Day
Don't just see the hill—experience the region. Here is how to build a complete tour day around the Magnetic Hill phenomenon.

I have sent hundreds of travellers to Magnetic Hill, and the ones who enjoy it most are those who treat the hill as just one chapter of a larger story. It is a strange, fascinating gravity illusion, but it only takes twenty minutes to appreciate. What you do with the rest of your day is where the real value lies.
When we curate a day tour, we ensure the Magnetic Hill tour inclusions make sense geographically. You shouldn't be zig-zagging across the valley; you should be moving in a logical flow. Here are the stops that transform a simple drive into a deep dive into Ladakhi life.
Combining Magnetic Hill with the Sangam
The most natural pairing is the Sangam—the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. It is only about 10 kilometres from the hill. You get to see the two rivers collide, one deep blue and the other a muddy green. It is stark, dramatic, and perfectly encapsulates the power of the landscape.
We usually suggest grabbing a quick tea at a nearby shack and watching the water for a while. The contrast between the gravity-defying hill and the raw power of the river confluence gives you a varied and complete morning of exploration.

Cultural Stops Worth Booking
On your way back to Leh, stop at the Pathar Sahib Gurudwara. It is maintained by the Indian Army and is incredibly peaceful. It is one of those places that feels grounded and real, regardless of your background. The community kitchen here serves a simple, warm meal that hits the spot after a morning in the wind.
Another worthy inclusion is the Spituk Monastery. It sits on a hill overlooking the Indus. If you book a private tour, ask for a guide who can explain the history of the statues inside. It is far less crowded than the larger monasteries like Thiksey, allowing you to walk the halls in near silence.

Photography Experiences
If you are a photographer, you know that the light at 4 PM is different from 10 AM. I always tell our clients to spend the morning at the hill and then head toward the Basgo ruins in the afternoon. The broken mud-brick structures against the stark mountain cliffs provide some of the best architectural shots in the region.
Bring a polarising filter if you have one. The high-altitude sun can be harsh, and the filter will help you manage the glare off the desert rocks. It makes all the difference when you are trying to capture the texture of the hills.

How to Customise Your Day Tour
Don't feel locked into a pre-made itinerary. If you love walking, ask your tour operator to swap a monastery stop for a hike to a nearby village overlook. If you want a slow day, focus on the river spots and skip the extra temple visits.
We can adjust these inclusions based on your pace. I prefer to build days that have a maximum of three main stops. Any more than that and you end up spending more time in the car than you do on the ground experiencing the actual location.

Essential Day Tour Inclusions
A professional day tour should include more than just the transport. We always insist on an experienced driver who knows the specific terrain—this road is not for amateurs. You should also expect a basic permit facilitation, a reliable lunch spot that prioritises hygiene, and enough flexibility to stop for photos whenever the light hits the valley just right.
Don't forget to pack your own water and a small bag of local snacks. Even on a private tour, having your own supply ensures you aren't waiting on anyone else when the urge for a break hits. It is your day; make sure the schedule respects your rhythm.

Before you book
Your time in Ladakh should feel like a discovery rather than a checklist. Magnetic Hill is a fun starting point, but the true depth of the region lies in the quiet river banks, the old monasteries, and the simple moments spent on the road between them.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
Can I visit Magnetic Hill and Thiksey Monastery in one day?
They are in opposite directions from Leh. While it is possible, it makes for a very long day of driving. We recommend splitting them into two separate day tours.
Do I need a permit for these tours?
Yes, you need an Inner Line Permit to visit many areas around Leh. Your tour operator will typically handle this, but ensure you have your identity documents ready.
